about

OTA042

This project almost never happened - but sometimes perseverance pays off!
Perhaps the main challenge was getting enough artists to remix the original AUTO tracks without providing a remix kit.
Instead, we invited them to take the less common approach of sampling whichever bits they liked and working from there to put their own twist on

Thanks to everyone involved! (MM)

"I cut out some sounds from the original track, stuck them in my favourite tool for rhythm music (Korg Gadget), and started to play around with these, adding almost no other sound. If I remember correctly."

"I basically kept the whole track and added a few samples/effects/beats...
I had very restricted means to do it, the oldest and slowest netbook on earth :) "

PALACE LIDO

"I'm a sucker for feedback and FM noise and this track was perfect for it. For the remix I decided to only use a small suitcase rig, which is a TR8-S, Eventide Space and a Volca FM. It's the first track I've made solely with this set up and it falls all over the place which is how I like things..."

"I remember having a lot of fun while doing this remix! To me, AUTO 39 has a peculiar cartoonish feeling that inspired me to create some sort of an afro-voodoo schizofrenia, mixed with seagulls, a repetitive voice loop and a didgeridoo sample having the ultimate freak party!
I used a small snippet of the intro melody and made a gated bassline with that. For the drums, percussion and noises I used a Eurorack modular system.
All other samples used came from my personal sample library."

"Truly had a great time making this! The original sounds simultaneously reminded me of pop and ASMR so I processed/edited the original track and layered lots of stuff on top to highlight those elements."

PLATZANGST

"Every sound in this track was extracted and processed from the original. Granular synths stretch and warp portions of the audio. Other parts are simply slowed down to transform them into bass drones. Filtering and distorting that same bass in a rhythmic way pushes the track along. A loop plays at multiple speeds to plod, march, or skip according to taste. Dynamic filtering pulls out hidden kick drums for new purposes. Hear these sounds again for the first time."

WOMBA

"First, I chopped some rhythmic segments from the original track and made a paranoiac grid that served as a foundation for the sound bullion. Then I added melancholic pads, played on ELZ1, a quirky 8-bit synth. Also threw in field-recorded urban snippets, fuzzed up by a shitty guitar pedal. Drenched everything in glorious OTO BAM reverb. But the coolest layer in the mix was transferred straight from a beat-up VHS tape with no FX tampering. It so happened at the time that my old friendo TOLS who is now the head of Moscow Geophysical Center asked me to digitize his video cassettes. Among mid-90’s trance videos, family cats and drinking chronicle there was a surreal segment – a bunch of scared-looking students taking an Army oath at the parade yard. The tape was really chewed up so the picture glitched violently. And the sound… Well, it would male Pierre Schaeffer envious! The mangled martial drum and demonic choir of those poor students can be heard from 2-20. Hopefully the results are sufficiently alien for the overall spookiness of AUTO project."

ARVO ZYLO

"I have always been into looping and layering, with constantly shifting tectonic plates of sound. I chose to do an "overture" with this source material from various tracks, and apply my style to some particularly interesting sound bits."
